As a young coach, people would expect me to be someone in the background who maybe just chats to some of the players. Well not me, I like to think that I step up to the mark and maybe even excell at it. I am more of a fitness coach than a skills coach. So during pre season training, I tend to take over for 2 months to get the team fit to play. Some of the drills I would take them for would be extended runs while they’re carrying a tackle bag over their shoulder, shuttle runs over 100 meters, press ups and sit ups in thick mud, weight training, I could go on.

So, day one of pre season we start off light. Simple runs around the pitch and some body weight workouts, just basic fitness drills to get the players back into the swings of things. Through out the weeks, these drills will get harder and harder to push the players. This is a quick but tough way to get their fitness levels as high as they can be.

The club has 3 coaches: myself, Chris, and Ross. Chris is head coach and is well respected. Ross is more strict and has more authority within the group. And then there’s me, I take all the technical and fitness drills. I do struggle to get the teams attention but luckily Chris and Ross get them to listen so I can carry on with the session. Now, I understand if there is a lack of respesct for me because i’m new, young, and not very strict. However, I do have a lot of experiance in coaching and playing Rugby League so I do have a lot to offer, it’s down to them if they want the help.

I used to play for the club in my youth and we were a decent team. Still had the same coaches, same drills, and the full back playes like I did. It took me back when I stood on that pitch after nearly 10 years. I’m glad to be back.
